Nishi High School first opened in 1905 as Hokkaido Hakodate Girls' High School. In 1950 the school was renamed Hokkaido Hakodate Nishi High School. The school was contructed on a steep slope using a terrace-style, making the interior layout complicated to the point where first-time visitors can get lost. Looking up from the campus nestled at the base of the mountain is Mount Hakodate, while looking down provides sweeping views of downtown and Hakodate Bay.
